May? Who even remembers May?

We are well into June now! I would have NO IDEA what the date is, except for the fact that "The Soprano's" Final Episode was on last night...June 10. So, I guess that makes today the 11th, right?

So, the kids are home for summer and we have actually done quite a bit of crafting...Kid Style. I'll get some pictures of those, because some of them are really cute. One day we made fabric beads, and I think we have found a new talent for Allison! She made all of these little fabric rolls, then decorated them with silver wire and beads...I love them all! Last week was "Fish Week", so all of our books and crafts had to do with fish. But...we had some disruption last week, and I think the only craft we completed were flip-flops, so we will continue with the fish theme this week. There are beach towels, hats, and a game I am making in the works.

I have also become addicted to Doll Quilts, and now have SEVERAL going in all different stages of progress. There are some random pieces lying about, wondering what they will be joined to next, I have a couple of tops ready to be quilted, and one that is in the process of being quilted. I also have at least 2 purses/tote bags in progress, another baby blanket, a game I'm working on for a friends' son (who also wants me to make him a stuffed kitty-but I'm not good at that yet so he might be a little flat). OH! I finally finished my Mom's Mother's Day Gift...you know, Father's Day is the new Mother's Day. lol! An adorable little pillow embroidered with one of the "Aunt Martha's" little vintage kittens, then framed out with some vintage repro fabric.

AND...the most important project of all...that same friend, Gayla, entrusted ME to repair some holes in a very old and much loved quilt made for her by her Grandmother many years ago! I'm too scared to even touch the one my mom has, much less be responsible for someone elses! But, I vow to do my best and protect that quilt with MY LIFE! (Old quilts are the most important of all treasures to me...way more important than any old gold, silver or diamonds!) Most of the little rips and tears are on the backing, which is muslin. I plan on just sewing those up by hand; but, since that has already been tried before and they just rip again, is there anything I can do that will make it more sturdy? I had thought about putting some fray check on it, but, would that be really super wrong??? I do plan on adding on a new layer of muslin to the back, so that all of the older muslin will be protected. So, another thought I had was to just iron on some interfacing on top of the old backing before I added the new one. How does that sound? This quilt still gets lots of use, so it needs to be able to withstand that.

PLEASE!!! If you have any suggestions, let me know!

SO...I definitely need to put the camera to work and get some of these pictures up! Hope everyone else is enjoying the summer, or winter, depending upon the Continent you live on!

OH Lauri you made me giggle! Seriously, it's just humble 'ole me but I thank you for your enthusiasm and compliments. I feel like a rock star this morning. *wink*

It's just that when I saw your post, I figured I knew the answer would be this book. I have been a quilter for 15 years and this book is the bible of repairs.

Some basic quilt care advice:

-If you store the quilt (or ANY quilt) NEVER put it in a plastic bag. Instead, put it in a 100% cotton pillow case. If you can find a kig sized one, you will have more room. If not, get some cotton fabric and sew yourself a giant draw string bag.

-If you fold it for any reason, take it out and fold it in a different direction from time to time to reduce the stress on the fibres in the fabric.

-Avoid direct sunlight as this damages quilts quickly.

-If you decide to hang your quilt, make sure you put a proper rod pocket on it so that all the weight is supported evenly to reduce stress on the quilt.

Usually, if you have questions, you can either go into a local quilt store OR you can try and contact a quilt guild in your area. Quilters on the whole are pretty generous with information and most would be happy to help you preserve your quilts.

Good luck! :)

Lelainia-apparently that book is out of print. Sheesh! It's not that old! And I can't find any books that even remotely talk about that subject. I'm going to look for a used copy online...I'll probably be able to find it there.

The only problem about asking other quilters is...1) I don't know any! Seriously. 2) The TWO quilt shops in my area are pretty far away.

HOWEVER...there is a BRAND NEW quilt shop opening, literally like 5 miles from my house! I can't wait!

PS...I lurk on your blog a lot and have been for years! But, I don't think I have ever left a comment, because all I can do is drool.

You're definitely in my Top 3, if not higher...
